INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SOILS

As part of celebrating the International Year of Soils – IYS 2015, students of our Amrita Vidyalayam undertook a field trip to the paddy fields of Cheruvayal Raman, popularly known as the ‘Nellachan of Wayanad’. Sri Raman, a farmer following traditional methods of cultivation, talked to the students about the importance of organic farming. The students were made aware of the profound importance of soil in human life and the measures required to protect soil resources. He explained at length the changing methods of farming, the importance of growing crops suited to the type of soil present in an area, how earthworms act in an eco-friendly way etc. It was really a wonderful experience for the students.
